Children with special needs are given opportunities to develop their creativity and self-expression through interactive music lessons and workshops.
Samantha Soh-Tann
Principal & Founder @ The Radiant Spectrum
Children with special needs in Singapore’s MOE Special Education (SPED) schools often lack access to tailored music education that fosters creativity and self-expression. The Radiant Spectrum’s (TRS) Outreach Initiative provides interactive music lessons and workshops, allowing these students to develop their talents and confidence through music.
TRS’s mission is to provide inclusive and accessible music education experiences for individuals of all abilities. This initiative embodies TRS’s core values by designing interactive lessons and workshops that promote creativity and self-expression. The organisation’s values of inclusivity, creativity and empowerment guide its efforts to break down barriers for students with special needs. By working with SPED schools across Singapore, TRS ensures that every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to engage with music and benefit from its transformative impact.
The TRS Outreach Initiative has made a significant positive impact on students and schools across Singapore.
Since its inception in 2022, the program has provided music lessons to over 150 students in various SPED schools, including Eden School, St. Andrew’s Mission School and MINDS Fernvale Garden.
Through these workshops, students have cultivated essential skills such as communication, creativity and confidence.
Beyond fostering student growth, the initiative has created a supportive community of educators and families who champion the role of music in special education. The TRS curriculum, designed specifically for SPED schools, ensures that lessons are accessible and engaging for students with diverse needs.
The initiative has also increased enrollment and participation rates, contributing to enhanced revenue through tuition fees, workshop fees and potential merchandise sales. As a startup social enterprise, TRS is on track to reach $1 million in revenue by 2024, with this project accounting for approximately 15-20% of the company’s overall income. While the programs and workshops at each MOE SPED school are tailored to their specific needs and budgets, TRS customises its offerings accordingly. These programs take place during regular school days, further generating weekday revenue.
TRS aims to expand the Outreach Initiative to serve more SPED schools across Singapore. By 2040, the organisation plans to collaborate with all 26 SPED schools in the country, ensuring that every child with special needs has access to high-quality music education. TRS will continue to introduce new programmes and workshops, enhance teacher training and build support networks to deepen the impact of its outreach efforts.
With a focus on long-term sustainability, TRS is committed to creating a more inclusive educational landscape where every student can thrive through the power of music. The organisation’s plans include expanding its reach, developing new partnerships and further enriching the learning experiences of students with special needs.
The Radiant Spectrum (Music) Pte Ltd is a pioneering music school in Singapore dedicated to providing inclusive and accessible music education. Through innovative programmes like the Outreach Initiative, TRS is transforming the lives of children with special needs, fostering creativity, and promoting social inclusion through the universal language of music.
