Mark Goyder is a champion of a better capitalism. He is an award-winning speaker, writer and broadcaster with over 15 years’ experience as a manager in manufacturing businesses. He is Founder of Tomorrow’s Company, a London-based business think tank which he led until 2017. Tomorrow’s Company has worked with business leaders, investors and policymakers and partners to inspire and enable business to be a force for good in society. In 2007, he brought together the leaders of 11 global companies to develop a shared vision of Tomorrow’s Global Company. Founded in 1996, Tomorrow’s Company paved the way for changes in Directors’ Duties under UK Company Law. It redefined the concept of corporate social responsibility in the 1990s and pioneered a new agenda for excellence in stewardship by asset owners, asset managers, boards, and shareholders which gave rise to the world’s first Stewardship Code in the UK. Its report ‘Restoring Trust – financial services in the 21st Century (2004) stimulated the emergence of the UN Principles of Responsible Investment. In 2018 Tomorrow’s Company published Better Stewardship – an agenda for concerted action , written by Mark, drawing on nearly a decade of work with the UK’s Stewardship Alliance of institutional investors. Mark has held advisory roles working with the leadership of Walgreens Boots Alliance, British Airways, British Telecommunications, Camelot and Novo Nordisk. He is currently Deputy Chair of a Public Service Reform Commission working for the Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. In 2019 he awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Civil Law by the University of East Anglia. Mark has addressed audiences all over the world. He was awarded the Institute of Management Studies (IMS) Tillers Millennium Trophy for best speaker. He was Director Magazine Director of the Month in June 2004. In a column about Mark Goyder’s influence journalist Anthony Hilton described Tomorrow’s Company as “five years ahead of the pack in looking at what is needed in governance terms to make British companies sustainable wealth creators”. Mark is the author of 3 books. His latest, co-written with Singapore’s Ong Boon Hwee, is “Entrusted: stewardship for responsible wealth creation” published in 2020. The authors argue that we need a better form of capitalism, one which, while promoting competition, is there to serve and not dominate; to respect human beings and not exploit them; to nurture our surrounding environment, and not destroy it. This will only be achieved by injecting the spirit and principles of stewardship into the decisions of investors, business leaders, regulators and citizens. The authors draw on their combined experience, combining the perspectives of East and West, to offer a vision and agenda for responsible wealth creation.
